Archives: Unlucky Night

The MR pits were still battling a push problem going into the weekend as they couldn't get practice in due to Mother Nature deciding Thursday was a good day to water the track. So they made some major adjustments to the car and really changed the car alot. 1st practice they were really loose so they made some more and it tightened up too much for 2nd practice. For the heat race it really went away and started pushing real bad... So the setup man Jeff Watson decided to take a chance for the feature and made a change to the car that ultimately made the car handle awesome on the outside line. But as bad luck would prevail Montana's night would get bad as he was involved in an incident on the back stretch that made the car start to overheat. This would end Montana's night early.

Archives: Montana's handling probs got worse in the feature

Well the MR pits had a rough night fighting a bad push in turn 2 and 4. They made some adjustments and made the car worse and worse. Montana states "Well the car was ok in the Consi when I was leading but only because I had about a 6 or 7 car length advantage and could use the whole track and could work with it, but then we had a caution with 4 laps to go and this hurt me because I couldn't fight the push problem with someone on the outside of me. So after the Consi we made some adjustments only to find out during the feature we made the car 10 times worse. At least we brought the car home in one piece so we will have to try again next week."

Well it was a long 2 weeks for the Manifold Racing Team. They had some good tips and some help here and there over the last week. They have soo many people to thank for them to be able to get a car on the track for this past weekends show. First off they want to thank Onie for donating the mini stock shell that ultimately became the new #99 Mini Stock. Montana also thanks Dan the owner of the #83 for letting us use their welder. Thanks to Jeff Watson setting up the front end with his guages and helping finish up some things Saturday Afternoon. Uncle Bob and Montana worked feverishly thru the night Friday and didn't stop working on the car till they got to the track late Saturday afternoon. They finished putting the car together at 3pm Saturday afternoon and made it to the track by 4pm. They entered the Feature with only 10 laps on the new car, Montana used his 10 lap heat race as a practice which told the crew the car was pushing real bad. So they made some sway bar adjustments and adjusted the tire pressures but in the feature the car still pushed bad and he was able to finish 16th after starting 21st.
Montana also wants to thank a little fan in the stands named Tasha for the great t-shirt she had made for him. "Thanks a bunch Tasha, I love the new shirt!" -Montana

(AP) Press Release
Baldwin Killed in Conn. Speedway Crash
THOMPSON, Conn. (AP) --
Race car driver Tommy Baldwin was killed in a crash at Thompson International Speedway during a Featherlite modified race.
Baldwin, 57, of Moriches, N.Y., is the father of Tommy Baldwin Jr., the crew chief for Nextel Cup rookie star Kasey Kahne. The elder Baldwin died at Hubbard Hospital in Webster, Mass., after Thursday night's accident.
Tommy Baldwin Sr. tried to avoid a collision with several cars coming out of a turn, state police said. His car went into the infield and struck three cement blocks near a light post.
State police said Baldwin's car was struck by a second car, driven by Ronald Silk, that had gone out of control and ended up in the infield. The 150-lap NASCAR race was postponed after 10 laps because of the accident and late hour.
Police said they would work in with NASCAR officials in the investigation. Both vehicles were taken to the state police barracks in Danielson.

Well looks like the #99 took yet another bad hit, word from the MR pits is the car is totalled and will not be back on the track. Montana blew his right front tire coming down the frontstretch and it sent him into the turn 1 wall at a high rate of speed. Montana suffered yet some more bumps and bruises but walked away from the accident. We will have to wait and see what the MR pits turn up in the next week or so for a car but rumor has it they have been spending alot of real late nights at the shop in Norwich. Stay Tuned for more updates...

Mike,
I've been reading with interest your "Flexmaster" saga on the www.ctautoracing site. As a former member of the staff at Waterford, and more importantly, a former member of the "racing press", I'd like say that I've been very impressed with your opinions.
It's too bad that people can't see that it's not a race issue with you, but rather a case of the Speedbowl presenting a show with less than acceptable family values.
Believe me when I say this, the racing press is just chock-full of some of the most hypocritical individuals you'd ever want to meet. While there are various exceptions to this rule, for the most part, I'd have to say that most of them are in a word, just plain idiots.
After over 35 years of direct involvement, I finally left racing during the 2003 season - I simply could no longer live with myself after hearing what goes on in that press box at Waterford.
Anyway, good luck & thanks for being "real".

Former Waterford Speedbowl Track Historian
Former Speedway Scene weekly columnist.

Let's set some things straight here since I am now being called Racist. You can say what you want you can turn your head the other way etc etc but the fact of the matter is I will always speak my mind! If you don't like it too bad, I am an AMERICAN and my freedom of speech is protected. Maybe I don't speak like ya'll do, maybe I am rough around the edges, maybe I have different values and on and on. READ MORE...Click Here

Archives: Montana's 1st Feature Win 7/31/2004

WOW!! The excitement in the MR pits was great after Montana lead the heat race from Green to Checkers! Then to back up the great night he Lead the Feature from Green to Checkers!!
The Heat race went well, he cruised to an easy victory leading all the laps even with one caution he seemed untouchable.
The Feature went Green to Checkers for the 2nd time this season! Nice Job Mini's!
The feature was a tough one for the Rookie, Montana started on pole and seemed to power his way away from the field at the start. But the #65 Rich Brooks started way in the back and showed everyone how great his car was by working his way through traffic to catch Montana with 6 laps togo. Well this became the battle of the night. Rich and Montana battled hard, Montana racing as hard as he could holding off Rich, The 2 got together with about 2 laps togo when Rich stuck his nose down below Montana in turn 1, the 2 cars were practically sideways coming out of turn 2 but both drivers were able to hang on and keep their cars from spinning out. Great driving by the both of them! It came right down to the wire on the final turn of the final lap when Montana got loose coming out of turn 4 and Rich had a great run on the outside and looked like he might have had the pass but Montana was able to cross the stripe first for a near photo finish!! Congrats to both Montana and Rich for giving the fans one heck of a show!! This was only Montana's 10th Feature Start ....
